JOB SUMMARY:The School Social Worker provides social services and assistance to improve the social and emotional functioning of students and their families in order to maximize academic functioning and achievement of all students at Southwest Early College High School. This position will assist students in identifying and overcoming any academic or personal barriers to learning to achieve educational success. The Guidance Counselor will collaborate with students and parents with course selection, scheduling and will be the initial point of contact for student concerns that span multiple subject areas as well as non-academic issues. The selected individual will become an expert on course and credit requirements and will work to establish a comprehensive counseling program which will meet the needs for high school students.

The Guidance Counselor will collaborate with students and parents with course selection, scheduling and will be the initial point of contact for student concerns that span multiple subject areas as well as non-academic issues. The selected individual will become an expert on course and credit requirements and will work to establish a comprehensive counseling program which will meet the needs for high school students.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct Intervention & Counseling
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with students.
- Provide consultation to parents, teachers, school personnel, and community agencies to enhance the learning and adjustment of students.
- Assist families in accessing appropriate community-based supports and programs as additional prevention/ intervention strategies.
- Assist in the development of and implementation of interventions for struggling students to support the teaching process and to maximize learning.
- Facilitate or assist with data collection to determine effectiveness of interventions through observations in general education classrooms in order to provide interventions to students.
- Provide analysis, evaluation, and alteration of interventions, behavior management systems, and programs designed for the social-emotional growth of students.
- Participate in crisis management by implementing protocols, providing counseling and/or making referrals.
- Counsel students, parents (in groups and individually) and consults with staff in the development of appropriate behavior goals.
- Respond to referrals from teachers, administrators, other school personnel, parents, students, and community agencies such as the Department of Human Services.
- Serve as a liaison between students, homes, schools, family services, courts and protective services to assist students who have disabilities or face abuse, or poverty.
- Act as a student advocate to ensure the rights of all students are respected.
- Assist students and parents with the secondary school course selection process according to specific state credit and graduation requirements and student needs and interests. An integral part of this process is assisting students and parents to develop a 4-Year Plan for meeting graduation requirements.
- Advise students with issues related to dropping courses and changing schedules, seeking support as needed, while ensuring that the school’s course selection and drop policies are followed.
- Review student transcripts and the entry of credits into the online transcript system and ensure that SECHS transcripts are accurate and up-to-date.
- Work with the administrative assistants to obtain school records from the student’s previous school (where applicable) and forwarding student records when appropriate.
- Work with school board psychologist to interpret assessment findings and relate them to educational performance and needs.
- Follow recommendations regarding accommodations, modifications, services and/or other supports to address those needs.
- Understand the requirements for and assist the principal to facilitate the administration of all high school testing, including exit exams, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams.
- Help students to research and understand their post-secondary career and educational options;
- Assist with student preparation of applications for college and jobs.
- Educate students and parents about college admissions requirements and financial aid.
- Coordinate high school graduation ceremonies.
- Collaborate with colleagues, including teachers, deans, other service providers and administrators, to ensure the success of each student.
- Regularly communicate respectfully with families and demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diverse issues.
- Observe federal, state, and local policies and regulations in the delivery of services.
- Report and refer critical incidents that jeopardize student well-being as obligated by law, administrative regulations, or ethical standards.
- Stay abreast of all state regulations related to incident reporting and documentation and train staff on the student distress protocol.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in Social Work or other related field
- Tennessee School Counselor certification
- Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience as a high school guidance counselor with experience in the administration and interpretation of a variety of test instruments to evaluate social-emotional skills and functioning
- Previous school social work experience is preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Experience using consultation techniques that allow for providing effective supports and interventions to address problems in social-emotional wellness and behavior;
- Skills in social-emotional intervention;
- Experience working with culturally diverse populations;
- Strong technology skills (especially with Microsoft Office products);
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
- Customer focused approach;
- Enjoys working with teenagers;
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills;
- High degree of flexibility;
- Team player with demonstrated leadership skills; and,
- Demonstrated ability to work well in fast-paced environment.
